What the housing in Leytonstone means for the job
Leytonstone is largely late Victorian terraced housing, and the side return is the defining feature: most of these houses have one, most of them have had it built over or partially built over, and where the outdoor unit goes depends on which. Where the side return is intact, a ground-level position on a slab clear of the fence line is the answer, which is the job in the photograph above. Where it has been built over into a kitchen extension, the position moves to the rear elevation or onto the flat roof of the extension itself. Bushwood and the streets around it form a conservation area, which closes the permitted development route for anything visible from the road.
Worth knowing before you book. Loft conversions in E11 are usually the reason people call, and they are the room most often under-specified. Under a slate roof with a rear dormer, a converted loft needs the size up from what the floor area suggests.

Waltham Forest publishes the boundary and it is worth checking before anything else, because inside it a unit visible from the road needs planning permission rather than permitted development.
Behind the building line at the rear, the position is usually straightforward either way. The eight conditions.
Can it go on my kitchen extension roof?
Yes, on a frame that spreads the load. On a Victorian terrace with a built-over side return it is often the best position available.
It also keeps the unit away from the fence line, which is where noise complaints between terraced neighbours start.
