The Samsung unit on a levelled base built up out of the border.

A heat pump and a cylinder
for a low basement in Wood Green

The plant room was in the basement and the ceiling was too low for an upright cylinder. So the cylinder lies on its side.

We installed a Samsung Gen 7 5kW heat pump in Wood Green N22 with a 200-litre horizontal unvented cylinder, chosen because the basement plant room was too low for an upright one. The system meets MCS requirements without losing any hot water capacity.

It is the kind of decision a site survey makes and a standard specification does not.

How the job was done

Step by step, in the photographs taken on site.

  1. 1

    A cylinder on its side

An upright 200-litre cylinder would not fit under the basement ceiling. A horizontal unvented cylinder holds the same and fits the space, so the plant room could stay where it was.

  2. The Samsung unit on a levelled base built up out of the border.
    2

    A levelled base outside

The outdoor unit stands at the rear of the house on a levelled base built up out of the border, not on soil, so its feet stay out of standing water and it does not settle out of level over a winter.

Wood Green N22: questions about this job

What if I have no room for a hot water cylinder?

There are options: a horizontal cylinder for low spaces, a slimline one, or a compact heat battery. The survey finds the space first and chooses the cylinder to fit it.

Is 5kW enough for a house?

For a smaller or well-insulated house, often yes. The heat loss survey sets the size, not the number of bedrooms.
