We replaced an outdated gas boiler in Hackney E9 with a Vaillant aroTHERM plus air source heat pump as part of a home upgrade. It runs the underfloor heating and the hot water, and was fitted in three days with the £7,500 grant taken off the price.
Doing it during a renovation means the heating is designed with the house rather than squeezed in afterwards.

In the side return
The unit stands on blocks in the side return, the narrow strip beside the back addition that many London terraces have. It keeps the garden clear and the pipe run to the house short.

Can a heat pump go in a side return?
Often. It needs enough clear space in front of and behind the coil, and the fan should not blow straight at a window or a neighbour's wall. We measure that at the survey.
Should I fit a heat pump during a renovation?
It is the best time. Pipework, underfloor heating and the cylinder space can all be planned in, and nothing has to be lifted twice.
