We installed a Vaillant air source heat pump, solar panels and a battery at a house in Finsbury Park N4. The panels power the heat pump through the day, the battery keeps the surplus for the evening, and the house buys far less electricity from the grid.
A heat pump runs on electricity, so it pairs naturally with solar. The battery is what makes the pairing work after the sun goes down.

Three parts, one system
The heat pump heats the house and the hot water, the panels generate through the day, and the battery stores what the house is not using at the time. Designed together, they are sized to each other.

The outdoor unit
The heat pump sits on raised feet against the rear wall, clear of the ground so defrost water drains and leaves cannot build up under the coil.

Can solar panels run a heat pump?
Partly. Through spring, summer and autumn days the panels can cover much of what the heat pump uses, especially for hot water. In midwinter the panels make less and the heat pump needs more, which is where a battery and a cheap overnight tariff help.
Is it cheaper to do heat pump and solar together?
Usually, because the survey, scaffolding and electrical work are done once. The heat pump grant applies to the heat pump, and solar and batteries currently carry 0% VAT.
