A heat pump sized to the house,
not rounded up, in Chingford

A renovation in Chingford E4 where the survey showed a smaller Vaillant heat pump would do the job properly. So a smaller one is what went in.

We replaced an old gas boiler in Chingford E4 with a smaller-capacity Vaillant aroTHERM plus air source heat pump, sized to the home's actual heating and hot water demand, during a wider renovation. Three days on site, with the £7,500 grant taken off.

Rounding a heat pump up to be safe is a common mistake. An oversized unit costs more to buy and runs less efficiently.

How the job was done

Step by step, in the photographs taken on site.

  1. The smaller aroTHERM plus on its feet against the house wall.
    1

    Smaller, on purpose

The heat loss survey showed the house did not need a larger unit, so a smaller one was fitted. It runs in longer, steadier cycles, which is quieter and more efficient than a big unit starting and stopping.

  2. Inside: the cylinder with the controller and the valves in one cupboard.
    2

    Against the house wall

The unit stands on blocks against the house wall, clear of the ground, with a short pipe run inside.

Chingford E4: questions about this job

Is a bigger heat pump better?

No. A heat pump sized well above what the house needs switches on and off more often, which lowers its efficiency and wears it faster. The right size comes from the heat loss calculation.
