What the housing in New Southgate means for the job
New Southgate sits on the Barnet, Enfield and Haringey boundaries and its housing reflects all three. The bulk is interwar semi-detached, with a side return that is often narrower than the same house in Enfield, which is why wall-mounted condensers are more common here than ground-level ones. Towards Bowes Park and Arnos Grove there are Victorian and Edwardian terraces, and around the station there is newer flatted development. The narrow side return is the recurring theme, and it is the reason the job in the photograph above went on brackets rather than on a base.
Worth knowing before you book. A wall-mounted condenser needs anti-vibration mounts and a wall that will take it. On a rendered blockwork extension that is worth checking properly rather than assuming, and it is part of the survey.

Can the outdoor unit go on the wall?
Often it has to, and it is a perfectly good position when it is done properly: proper brackets, anti-vibration mounts and enough clearance in front of the coil.
It adds £250 to £600 over a ground-level position, mostly in brackets and labour.
