A high temperature heat pump
in North Finchley

A Samsung Gen 7 12kW that runs at the higher water temperatures radiators were designed for, so the house came off gas without new radiators.

We installed a Samsung Gen 7 12kW high temperature heat pump in North Finchley N12 with a Vaillant uniSTOR HP 200-litre cylinder. The high temperature model runs at the flow temperatures the existing radiators were built for, so the house came off gas without replacing them.

The size came from a room-by-room heat loss calculation, and our own MCS certified team commissioned it.

How the job was done

Step by step, in the photographs taken on site.

  1. 1

    High temperature, same radiators

A standard heat pump is most efficient at lower water temperatures and often needs bigger radiators. The high temperature Gen 7 runs efficiently hotter, which is what let this house keep its radiators.

  2. The Samsung unit on wall brackets on the side of the house, clear of the ground.
    2

    On brackets, off the ground

The outdoor unit is mounted on wall brackets on the side of the house, clear of the ground, which keeps the side passage usable and the coil away from leaves and splashback.

  3. The cylinder and expansion vessel in their own space inside.
    3

The cylinder in its own space

The 200-litre stainless cylinder, the buffer and the expansion vessel are grouped in one plant space inside, with the valves where an engineer can reach them.

North Finchley N12: questions about this job

What is a high temperature heat pump?

One designed to heat water to temperatures close to a gas boiler's while staying efficient. It suits houses that want to keep their existing radiators.

Can I mix makes, like a Samsung heat pump and a Vaillant cylinder?

Yes, if the cylinder is designed for heat pumps and its coil matches the unit's output. It was chosen here for its stainless vessel and 25-year warranty.
