A Mitsubishi Ecodan, solar and a battery
in Winchmore Hill

We installed a Mitsubishi Ecodan 11.2kW heat pump with a 250-litre cylinder, a 4.45kW solar system of ten panels and a 9.5kWh battery in Winchmore Hill N21. Every room was checked against its existing radiators so the system could run at 55°C, which gives it a designed seasonal efficiency (SCOP) of 3.99.
A SCOP of 3.99 means almost 4 units of heat for every unit of electricity over a year. The £7,500 grant was applied, and at 32dB the unit sat within permitted development, so no planning application was needed.
How the job was done
Step by step, in the photographs taken on site.
-
1
Every room checked
The heat loss survey went room by room, comparing what each room loses on a cold day with what its existing radiator can give at 55°C. The design confirmed the radiators could stay, which kept the job simpler and the house familiar.
-
2Solar on the rear pitch
Ten panels across the rear roof slope give 4.45kW of generation. Through the middle of the day the heat pump can run on the house's own electricity, and the battery keeps the surplus for the evening.
-
3Sited off the fence
The Ecodan stands far enough off the boundary fence that the fan does not blow straight back off it, which is what makes a badly sited unit sound louder than it is.

What is SCOP?
The seasonal coefficient of performance: how many units of heat a heat pump delivers for each unit of electricity, averaged over a year. 3.99 means almost four. It depends on the design flow temperature, which is why the room-by-room survey matters.
Do I need planning permission for a heat pump?
Usually not, if the unit meets the permitted development conditions, including the noise limit. This one measured 32dB, well within them.
