We replaced a gas boiler in Neasden NW10 with a Vaillant aroTHERM plus air source heat pump in three days, with the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant taken off the price. It now provides the heating and hot water.

The unit is set into the corner of the garden against the fence, on a raised base clear of the lawn.

How the job was done

Step by step, in the photographs taken on site.

  1. The aroTHERM plus in the corner of the garden, raised off the ground.

Out of the way, still serviceable

The corner of the garden keeps the unit out of the way of the lawn and the view from the house, while leaving the space round it that the manufacturer asks for and an engineer needs.

  2. The same unit against the fence, with the pipe run along its foot.

    Tested before handover

The system was filled, pressure tested and commissioned by our MCS certified team, then handed over with the controls explained.

Neasden NW10: questions about this job

How far can a heat pump be from the house?

Several metres is normal. The further it is, the longer the insulated pipe run and the more it costs, so the survey looks for a spot that balances a quiet position with a short run.
