We replaced an old gas boiler in Enfield EN3 with a 7kW Vaillant aroTHERM plus air source heat pump and a new hot water cylinder, in three days on site. The £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant was approved within 48 hours of the application.
The owner is retired and wanted lower running costs without a long disruption. Three days is what a straightforward boiler swap to a heat pump takes when the survey has done its job.

On the patio that was already there
The outdoor unit stands on rubber anti-vibration blocks on the existing patio slabs rather than on a new concrete base, against the rear fence and next to the drainage the house already had. The defrost water has somewhere to go, and nobody had to dig up the garden.

2The cylinder where the old hot water was
Inside, the new cylinder went into the cupboard the old boiler's hot water came from, so no new space had to be found. The controller is at eye height, and the valves are grouped where an engineer can reach them without taking anything apart.

The grant, handled
We applied for the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant on the owner's behalf and it came back approved in two days. The grant comes off the price before you pay; you never claim it back yourself.

How long does it take to replace a gas boiler with a heat pump?
For a typical house, about three days on site, as here. The first day takes the old system out and sets the outdoor unit, the second fits the cylinder and pipework, the third fills, commissions and shows you how it works.
A bigger job, with new radiators or zones, takes longer, and the survey tells you how long before you agree to anything.
Do I have to apply for the £7,500 grant myself?
No. The installer applies, and the grant is taken off the price you pay. On this job the approval came through in 48 hours.
