A Samsung heat pump
with two heating zones in Enfield
An 8kW Samsung Gen 7 sized from a heat loss survey, a 300-litre cylinder for a family's hot water, and the house split into two zones so each part is heated on its own schedule.

We fitted a Samsung Gen 7 8kW air source heat pump to a family home in Enfield EN3, with a Joule 300-litre unvented cylinder and a two-zone heating system. The size came from a room-by-room heat loss calculation, not from the size of the old boiler.
The unit runs on R290, a refrigerant with a global warming potential of 3, and carries Samsung's 7-year warranty through our approved installer status. The cylinder's stainless inner vessel has a 25-year warranty.

Sized from the heat loss, not the boiler
The survey measured every room and worked out how much heat each one loses on a cold day. That total, not the rating of the gas boiler it replaced, is what set the heat pump at 8kW.
A heat pump sized too big cycles on and off and wears out sooner; one sized too small cannot keep up in January. The calculation is how you avoid both.
-
2Tight to the flank wall
The outdoor unit stands against the side wall on anti-vibration feet. It uses none of the garden anyone would actually sit in, and the pipe run to the cylinder inside stays short, which keeps the heat losses on the way down.
-
3Two zones, two schedules
The house is split into two heating zones with their own controls, so the part of the house in use can be warm without heating the part that is not. The 50-litre buffer tank keeps the heat pump running smoothly when one zone closes and the other stays open.
Anti-freeze valves on the outdoor pipework drain it if the power is ever off in a freeze, so a winter power cut cannot split a pipe.

Air-to-air heat pumpsEnfield EN3: questions about this job
Why does a heat pump need a buffer tank?
Not every system does. Where the heating is split into zones, a buffer gives the heat pump a steady volume of water to heat when only one small zone is calling, so it runs in long even cycles instead of starting and stopping.
The survey decides whether yours needs one.
Can a heat pump heat a 300-litre cylinder?
Yes. A cylinder made for a heat pump has a larger coil so it heats properly at the lower temperatures a heat pump produces. It is sized for the household, and 300 litres suits a family home with a bath and several showers.
