We replaced a gas boiler in Holland Park W14 with a 7kW Vaillant aroTHERM plus air source heat pump in three days, with the £7,500 grant taken off the price. The outdoor unit fits a narrow side passage, and the cylinder is a short pipe run away.

Space is what most west London houses lack, and a side passage is often the answer if the unit gets the clearance it needs.

How the job was done

Step by step, in the photographs taken on site.

  1. The aroTHERM plus in the narrow space beside the fence.
    1

    Fitted to the passage

The side passage was narrow, so the unit was placed where it still has the clear space in front of the coil that the manufacturer specifies, without blocking the way through.

  2. The controller, expansion vessels and valves above the cylinders.
    2

A short run to the cylinder

The cylinder is close to the outdoor unit, which keeps the pipework short, the heat losses low and the installation quicker.

Holland Park W14: questions about this job

Can a heat pump go in a narrow side passage?

Often, if the passage leaves the manufacturer's minimum clearances and a way through. We measure it at the survey rather than guessing from a photo.

What if my house is in a conservation area?

Permitted development rules for heat pumps are stricter in some conservation areas, especially on walls facing the road. A side or rear position is usually the answer, and we check before quoting.
