We installed a Samsung 16kW high temperature heat pump in Walton-on-Thames KT12 with a 300-litre horizontal Tempest unvented cylinder in the loft, chosen because the loft was too low for an upright one. A 50-litre buffer, a Hive thermostat and anti-freeze valves complete the system.

The size came from a detailed heat loss assessment, and the unit carries Samsung's 7-year warranty.

How the job was done

Step by step, in the photographs taken on site.

On the patio, on its own feet

The outdoor unit stands on anti-vibration feet on the rear patio, with the isolator on the wall beside it and a short run into the house.

  2. The 300-litre cylinder lying horizontally in the loft, with the buffer beside it.

A cylinder lying down in the loft

The loft had the floor space for a 300-litre cylinder but not the height, so it is a horizontal one. It gives a large family's worth of hot water, with the buffer standing beside it.

Walton-on-Thames KT12: questions about this job

Where should a heat pump not go?

Not facing glass, not boxed into a corner that reflects the fan noise, not where the defrost water will freeze on a path, and not closer to the boundary than the permitted development rules allow.

Do you work in Surrey?

Yes, including Walton-on-Thames, Kingston and Epsom.
