We installed a Samsung Gen 7 12kW heat pump in a South Croydon CR2 home under renovation, with a 250-litre Samsung Joule cylinder in a plant room in the utility. Underfloor heating on the ground floor and radiators upstairs run as two zones, and the granny annex is now on the same system.

The design took account of the external wall insulation planned for the house, so the heat pump is sized for the house as it will be, not as it was.

How the job was done

Step by step, in the photographs taken on site.

  1. 1

Designed for the house after the works

The heat loss survey included the planned external wall insulation, the new underfloor heating and the upgraded radiators, so the heat pump was sized for the finished house.

  2. The Samsung Gen 7 on the existing base, with the isolator on the house wall.
    2

Short run to the plant room

The outdoor unit went on an existing concrete base within five metres of the cylinder, with the isolator on the house wall where it can be reached without walking past the unit.

  3. The 250-litre cylinder and the controls in the plant room.
    3

    The annex joined up

The granny annex, previously separate, is now part of the main heating system, so one heat pump serves the whole property.

South Croydon CR2: questions about this job

Can one heat pump heat a house and an annex?

Yes, if it is sized for both and the annex is on its own zone. The survey checks the heat loss of both before sizing.

Should I insulate before fitting a heat pump?

If insulation is planned, the heat pump should be sized for the house after it, as here. Otherwise you pay for capacity you will not need.
