We installed a Samsung 16kW air source heat pump in Leytonstone E11 as a complete heating and hot water system: a Sunamp 300X-Plus heat store, a Hive thermostat, a 25-litre buffer with secondary circulation pump, 35mm dual-insulated copper pipework, a dedicated fuse board and a concrete base for the unit.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme application and voucher were handled for the owner, and MCS, Building Control and DNO paperwork were issued on completion.

On its own slab, off the fence
The unit stands on a concrete slab set clear of the fence line, with the condensate taken away below ground instead of running across the paving, where it would freeze on a winter morning.

Big pipe for a big unit
A 16kW unit moves a lot of water, so the flow and return are 35mm copper, dual-insulated, to keep the flow rate right and the losses low.

Its own fuse board
The heat pump and hot water system have a dedicated fuse board, so they are protected and isolated separately from the rest of the house.

Why does pipe size matter on a heat pump?
A heat pump needs a higher water flow than a boiler. Pipes that are too small restrict it, and the unit runs less efficiently or struggles. Larger units need larger pipe.
