Two 16kW heat pumps in cascade
for a large house in Barnet
A house with a heating demand one heat pump could not meet. Two Samsung Gen 7 16kW units run together, 32kW in all, staged on and off by their own controls.

We designed and installed two Samsung Gen 7 16kW high temperature heat pumps in cascade for a large detached house in Barnet EN4, giving 32kW of combined output. Samsung's cascade controls stage the two units on and off, share the running hours between them and keep the house warm on one if the other is being serviced.
Hot water comes from a 460-litre indirect unvented cylinder with a 28.54kW coil, and a 200-litre buffer tank separates the heat pumps from the heating circuits. The units run on R290 and have a SCOP of 4.51.
How the job was done
Step by step, in the photographs taken on site.
-
1Why two machines, not one big one
The heat loss survey put the house's demand above what any single domestic heat pump delivers. Two 16kW units in cascade meet it, and on milder days only one needs to run, which is more efficient than one oversized unit at part load.
-
2Each one can be isolated
Flow and return to each unit are in insulated copper with isolating valves on each leg. Either unit can be shut down and worked on while the other keeps the house warm.
-
3Hot water at scale
A 460-litre cylinder with a large 28.54kW coil recovers quickly after heavy use, and the 200-litre buffer with a secondary pump keeps the system hydraulically stable however many zones are calling.

What is a cascade heat pump system?
Two or more heat pumps connected to work as one, with controls that bring each on as the demand rises. It suits large houses whose heat loss is beyond a single unit, and it gives you a backup if one unit fails.
Does the £7,500 grant cover a cascade system?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme has a capacity limit per installation, so eligibility for a large system is checked case by case at the survey.
