# Gym and studio air conditioning

A gym is the only premises we work in where the customers are deliberately generating as much heat and moisture as they can. That changes the problem from cooling a room to moving air through one.

- Free survey and heat load calculation on jobs over 5,000 pounds
- Quote split into plant, install, electrics and out-of-hours
- Out of hours fitting where the business cannot close

A person exercising hard puts out five to ten times the heat of a person sitting down, so a full studio class is a very large and very sudden load. Gym systems are sized on peak occupancy and on air changes, not on floor area, and typically cost from 4,700 pounds.

Get the ventilation wrong and no amount of cooling fixes it, because the complaint will be about the air rather than the temperature.

## What a gym puts into the room

| Source | What it contributes | Why it matters |
| --- | --- | --- |
| People exercising | Five to ten times the heat output of a seated person | A 20-person class is a load a small office never sees |
| Moisture | Sweat and breath, and a lot of both | Cooling alone leaves the room cold and clammy |
| Sudden peaks | Empty at 10am, full at 6pm, empty at 8 | A system that reacts slowly is always behind |
| Equipment | Treadmills and screens, minor next to the people | Real but not the driver |
| Smell | The thing members actually complain about | That is air changes, not temperature |

## Air changes are the specification, not temperature

A split air conditioning system recirculates. It takes air from the room, cools it and puts it back, and it does not bring in a single litre of fresh air. In an office that is fine. In a room where twenty people are breathing hard, it means a cool room that still feels used, and that is the review a gym gets.

So a gym needs mechanical ventilation alongside the cooling, sized on air changes per hour and on occupancy, supplying fresh air and extracting stale. It is the part that is missing from most of the cheap quotes we are asked to look at, and it is the part members notice first.

The two work together. Ventilation brings in outside air, which in July is warm, and the cooling deals with it. Sizing one without the other produces a system that is either always losing or never doing anything.

## The peak, and why average sizing fails here

A gym's load profile is unlike any other premises. A studio can go from empty to twenty people at maximum effort in ninety seconds, hold it for forty-five minutes, and empty again. Nothing about that is an average.

Sizing on the average produces a room that is comfortable at 11am and unusable at 6pm, which is the only time that matters commercially. Sizing on the peak produces a system that spends most of the day heavily oversized, cycling, and costing more than it should to run.

The answer is inverter equipment that genuinely modulates across a wide range, zoned so the studio and the gym floor are separate, with the ventilation ramping on occupancy rather than running flat out all day.

## Where the air comes out

Not down onto anybody lifting. A cold draught on a warm back is how people pull muscles, and it is the second commonest complaint after the smell.

So the discharge runs along the ceiling and down the circulation routes, with the cassettes placed on the plan rather than on the ceiling grid. In a studio with mats on the floor that means keeping the vanes off the mat positions entirely.

Ceiling height helps here more than it does anywhere else. A gym with four metres of height has room to throw air a long way before it reaches anybody, which is one of the few things that makes a gym easier than an office.

## What a gym system costs

Quoted from occupancy, air changes and a drawing rather than a price list. The indicative figures below use the same model as the rest of the site, the base for the number of indoor units plus the cassette uplift, and anything involving ventilation is quoted from the design.

| Scope | Usual system | Indicative price |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Small studio, one room | 2 to 3 cassettes, zoned | £4,700 to £10,200 |
| Gym floor plus studio | Separate zones, sized on peak occupancy | From the load calculation |
| Mechanical ventilation | Supply and extract, sized on air changes | Quoted at survey |
| Changing rooms | Extract rather than cooling, usually | Quoted at survey |
| Maintenance, per unit | Standard contract, two visits a year | From £95 plus VAT per visit |

Every figure on this site is an estimate based on published UK market ranges and our own installation experience. It is not a quotation. The price you are given after the free survey is the price you pay.

### Send us the plan

A floor plan and a rough idea of the use gets you a realistic budget figure without anybody visiting. A survey turns it into a fixed price.

## Gyms and studios: common questions

### Why does our gym still smell when the air conditioning is on?

Because cooling and ventilation are different jobs and you probably only have the first. A split system recirculates the same air, cooled. It removes heat and it removes nothing else.

Smell is an air changes problem: fresh air in, stale air out, sized on how many people are in the room. It is a modest addition to a cooling installation and it is the one members comment on.

### How do you size air conditioning for a gym?

From peak occupancy rather than floor area. A person exercising hard puts out several times the heat of a person sitting at a desk, so twenty people in a studio is a load that has nothing to do with how many square metres the studio has.

Then air changes per hour for the ventilation, then the equipment, then the building. In that order, because the people dominate.

### Members complain about the draught. What can be done?

Usually a lot, and rarely by replacing equipment. Changing vane angles, closing one direction on a four-way cassette, or moving a unit off a mat position solves most of it.

It is worth a survey before assuming the system is wrong, because a gym is a room where the right amount of air in the wrong place feels worse than not enough air.

### Can you fit it without closing?

Usually. Most of the gym work we do happens overnight or in the quiet hours between the morning and evening peaks, and the out-of-hours premium is a visible line on the quote rather than buried in the rate.
