The decontamination room, where the autoclaves and the washer-disinfector run all day, usually needs a unit of its own. Air conditioning cools and dehumidifies. Units are chosen with filters the practice can wash, and the cleaning schedule is agreed at handover rather than left to the annual service. The full service, the coil cleaned and the condensate tray and drain checked, is planned around clinic days so no surgery loses a session. ## Where the unit goes in a treatment room Not above the chair, not blowing across the patient, and not blowing onto the instrument tray or the nurse's side. In most surgeries that means a high wall position behind the clinician, or a cassette offset in the ceiling, with the airflow directed along the wall. The condensate is piped to a drain, with a small pump where there is no fall, so there is never a drip tray in a clinical room. ## Ventilation is a separate requirement NHS technical guidance, such as HTM 01-05 for decontamination in dental practices, has its own recommendations for how clinical and decontamination rooms are ventilated. A split air conditioning system recirculates the room's air and does not meet those on its own. We fit the cooling. Where a room needs a ventilation design as well, we will say so at the survey and work alongside whoever designs it, rather than present a cooling unit as the answer to a ventilation question. ## Installed without cancelling a clinic Most practice work is done in the evening or at a weekend, room by room, with each room cleaned and ready for the next morning's list. ## What it costs Clinics are quoted from a heat load calculation and a floor plan, and the quote separates plant, installation, electrics and out-of-hours working. The price you are given after the free survey is the price you pay. ## Dental and medical clinics: common questions ### Can air conditioning be used in a dental surgery? Yes, and many surgeries have it. The conditions are the position, so the air does not blow across the patient or the instruments, filters that are cleaned on a schedule, and a separate answer for ventilation where the room needs one. We will check the practice's infection control policy at the survey and design to it. ### Will it spread aerosols around the room? A split unit moves the air that is already in the room. Positioned correctly, along a wall and away from the patient, it does not blow across the working area. Removing aerosols is a ventilation and air cleaning question rather than a cooling one, and we will not claim otherwise. ### Can you install out of hours? Yes. Evenings and weekends, room by room, with each room ready for the next clinic. The out-of-hours premium is a separate line on the quote, not hidden in a rate. ### How often should the filters be cleaned in a clinic? More often than in an office. Washable filters are usually cleaned by the practice every few weeks, on a schedule we agree at handover, with a full service at least once a year.
