One 5 kWh battery with the hybrid inverter it needs and the MCS certification is £4,515 to £5,349. Each further 5 kWh adds £2,040 to £2,335.

A real two battery quotation, with the inverter and certification, came to £6,555. Reconstructing it from the rates below gives £6,555.

## What goes into a battery price

The inverter is the line people are surprised by, and it is the reason two quotations for the same battery can differ by two thousand pounds.

## What the price includes

Everything below is inside the figure. Nothing here is an extra we add later.

### The hybrid inverter

A battery cannot be bolted onto a string inverter. If you already have a hybrid, the price drops by the inverter line; if you do not, it is in the figure rather than added later.

### MCS certification

Registration NIC-601634, and the DNO notification that goes with connecting storage to the grid.

### Working with what you have

If there are already panels, we design around the existing array rather than replacing it. If there are none, a battery still pays on a cheap overnight tariff.

## Questions people actually ask

### Can I have a battery without solar panels?

Yes. It charges overnight on a cheap tariff and discharges through the expensive part of the day, which is a real saving on its own before a single panel is fitted.

It also gives you something during a cut, if the system is specified with a backup gateway.

### How big a battery do I need?

Five kWh suits a flat or a two bedroom house with no heat pump. Ten is the common answer for a three or four bedroom house. Fifteen starts to make sense once there is a heat pump, air conditioning or an EV in the house.

Above about fifteen it stops being a size you pick off a list and becomes a design, so we work it out from your half-hourly consumption rather than guessing.

### Does a battery help with air conditioning?

More than most people expect. Air conditioning runs hardest in the late afternoon and evening, which is exactly when the panels are fading and the tariff is at its peak.

Storing the middle of the day and spending it at six in the evening is the difference between cooling being cheap and cooling being something you hesitate over.
